Fishermen Safety

The safety of commercial Fishermen, one of the most dangerous occupations in the U.S, is the goal of a very innovative and popular training program coordinated by New Directions Southcoast, Inc. in collaboration with several community and business partners. To focus attention on the most important issues affecting safety at sea, and to make it attractive to the fishermen, the program was designed for one day and is hands on. It uses a curriculum approved by the Coast Guard, is free to the fishermen and covers the following topics: man overboard, fire fighting, emergency communications, life raft equipment and deployment, EPIRBS, signal flares, damage control (patching and flood control procedures including pump operation, basic stability), entering a life raft and proper use of the immersion suit. In addition, a Coast Guard helicopter and crew provide instruction in proper at sea hoist procedures.

This nationally recognized program has successfully trained almost 900 fishermen since 2005, and its continued success depends entirely on donations.  If you want to know more about this program, are a fisherman who wants to sign up for the program, or want to know how you can help ensure its continued existence through a donation, please contact New Directions Southcoast, Inc. in New Bedford, Massachusetts at 508-979-1616 Ext: 148 or email Edennehy@detma.org
